Just Tasted - Benromach 10 & Benromach 15 Year Old
Benromach 10 Year Old Whisky
Benromach Distillery is owned by Gordon & MacPhail and since launching this 10 year old whisky it has received many awards, including a gold at the 2014 World Whisky Awards (WWA). Created from 80% bourbon barrels, 20% sherry hogsheads with the final year spent in first fill Oloroso casks.
Nose: Gentle smoke, spiced ginger, lots of stewed fruits, apples, raisins, figs, even a touch of prune? getting sweet pears the more the dram warms up and airs.
Palate: Creamy, lots of ginger and wood smoke. Quite a mouthful. Lots of dark chocolate & bitterness, lemon zest, slight biscuity/malty notes.
Overall: Superb value for money, so complex & developed for an entry level dram. Really enjoyed this, my new go-to dram for now!

Benromach 15 Year Old Whisky Recently added to the Benromach core range is this 15 year old Speyside expression, created from whisky matured in both sherry & bourbon casks. Nose: Smoke and ginger coming through, but a lot slower than the 10 year old. Feels rather sophisticated, a lot more defined and delicate flavours on the nose (posh @rosbodtoo). Lots of orange peel, figs, prunes, cedar, a little 'nutty'. Lot's of lovely sherried notes. Can't help but think this dram would go really well with a strong blue cheese & honeycomb? Debatable, must try this next time I have some blue cheese to hand... Palate: Lots of spice, ginger, white pepper on first taste. Not as much smoke. A little fight going on with the rich fruity/sherried notes trying to push to the front of the spice, but struggling to make way! Figs, soaked sultanas, orange peel, dark chocolate, burnt sugar. Pepper still lingering in the background. Overall: I love big hitting notes, the spice on this was lovely and long but I can't help thinking that it's a shame the other notes feel slightly masked but I might just be comparing it to much against the 10, which I loved. Great dram though, must go back and explore this more at a later date... Available to purchase here priced £47.95
