Just Tasted - Benromach 35 Year Old

Benromach-35-year-old-scotch-whisky Benromach distillery have released one of their rarest whiskies to date, this beautifully presented Benromach 35 year old. Distilled in the 1980's before the current owners took over, the whisky was matured in first fill ex-sherry casks. Housed in a bespoke decanter and wooden presentation box, designed to reflect the many components gone into making this special Speyside whisky, the grained wood on the washbacks, the lime washed distillery walls and the copper stills, all reflected in the look and feel. Benromach have really focussed on the finer details when creating this Speyside whisky masterpiece. Benromach, Speyside's smallest working distillery, has had a bit of a turbulent history, closing for 10 years before the current owners Gordon & MacPhail took over. Since reopening in 1998 the distillery has gone from strength to strength offering a solid core range of whisky as well as limited edition releases. A few years back, we tasted the distillery's 1976 release, which we thoroughly enjoyed and recently sampled the 10 & 15 years old offerings, here on our whisky blog.
"Golden amber in colour, Benromach 35 Years Old (ABV 43%) is a most satisfying Speysider with cinnamon hints and beeswax polish, stewed pear and a delicate charred Oak edge."
benromach-35-year-old-scotch-whisky What did we think of Benromach 35 Year Old? A very sophisticated nose - delicate orange blossom, sultanas, mixture of soft spices, cinnamon & cloves, honey, ginger, very ripe honeydew melon, even a touch of eucalyptus. As the dram warms up, the oak becomes more prevalent. The Palate gives off cloves, orange zest, oak, white pepper, dried fruit, melon, touch of ripe banana. A full bodied mouthfeel, a touch oily, hints of white chocolate with tobacco lingering. Quite a long finish, gentle warmed spice with orange zest... The only downside I would give when tasting this 35 year old Benromach, would be the bottling strength. Only because it's far too easy to drink but I would probably say that about most whiskies around this ABV. I like a bit more punch but this would certainly not stop me from enjoying this whisky again, if I was lucky enough to get the chance. Overall this is a very well produced whisky and demonstrates that with Gordon & MacPhail at the helm, Benromach can continue to produce excellent whisky, not only in look & design but very much in substance! Sadly our allocation of this release sold out within hours of launch but we've heard whispers that there might be a second phase of this whisky released later in the year.
