A very exciting day for independently owned Ayrshire distillery Lochlea, the launch of their inaugural single malt whisky on the very day we celebrate Scotlands National Bard Robert Burns. Lochlea First Release has been crafted from Lowland single malt matured in first fill bourbon and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, then bottled naturally at 46% vol. Robert Burns lived and worked on the farm at Lochlea from 1777 to 1784. It also happens to be my mother in laws birthday, so a double celebration and good cause to raise a glass of Lochlea tonight when we address the haggis!
Tasting Notes
Awards
Nose
Bursting with fresh orchard fruit, apple, zesty orange and pear drops. Some brown sugar, toffee and vanilla fudge in the background.
Palate
Rich and sweet, with burnt caramel and hazelnuts. Still plenty of stewed fruit and now some toasted oats, cinnamon and clove coming through.
Finish
Medium mouth coating, holding on to that fresh fruit, cereal sweetness and gentle spice.
